Why use an online tile calculator before you buy?
Ordering too few tiles delays your project when batches no longer match; ordering too many wastes money and storage space. A tile calculator online turns your room measurements and tile dimensions into an area-based estimate so you can compare quotes, plan deliveries, and discuss cuts and borders with your installer using the same numbers.
HomeSols keeps the model transparent: we convert feet, inches, meters, or centimeters into square meters internally, compute each tile’s footprint, apply your waste percentage to cover breakage and tricky cuts, then round up to whole tiles. Optional pricing fields help you sanity-check retail packaging—whether you buy loose tiles, cartons, or mixed boxes for feature strips.
Floor tiling in kitchens, hallways, and bathrooms
For rectangular floors, measure the longest clear runs and note obstacles such as islands, stair nosings, or floor drains that reduce full tiles. Large-format tiles show lippage if subs are uneven, so waste may be higher than the calculator suggests—raise waste percentage for diamond patterns, narrow halls, or rooms with many corners.
Wall tiling and splashbacks
Splashbacks and shower walls often include partial tiles above doors or around niches. Use wall mode with width and height, then increase waste if you stack bond, use mosaic sheets, or mix multiple tile sizes. Remember sockets and cutouts: professionals often template complex cuts; your numeric estimate is still a strong starting point for purchasing.
Typical waste percentages
Straight grid layouts on simple rectangles often use 8–12% waste. Diagonal installs, mixed sizes, or fragile materials may need 12–18% or more. If your retailer allows returns on full unopened boxes, rounding up to whole boxes is still safer than running short mid-install.
