How the math works

Room area = room width × room depth (floor) or width × height (wall), after converting to consistent units.

Tiles to buy = ceil( (room area × (1 + waste%)) ÷ (tile width × tile height) ). Grout lines are not subtracted in this simple model—add extra waste for diagonal layouts or large cuts.

Floor tiling in kitchens, hallways, and bathrooms

For rectangular floors, measure the longest clear runs and note obstacles such as islands, stair nosings, or floor drains that reduce full tiles. Large-format tiles show lippage if subs are uneven, so waste may be higher than the calculator suggests—raise waste percentage for diamond patterns, narrow halls, or rooms with many corners.

Wall tiling and splashbacks

Splashbacks and shower walls often include partial tiles above doors or around niches. Use wall mode with width and height, then increase waste if you stack bond, use mosaic sheets, or mix multiple tile sizes. Remember sockets and cutouts: professionals often template complex cuts; your numeric estimate is still a strong starting point for purchasing.

Typical waste percentages

Straight grid layouts on simple rectangles often use 8–12% waste. Diagonal installs, mixed sizes, or fragile materials may need 12–18% or more. If your retailer allows returns on full unopened boxes, rounding up to whole boxes is still safer than running short mid-install.

How do I calculate how many tiles I need?

Multiply the room width by the room length (or wall width by wall height) to get surface area. Multiply tile width by tile height for one tile’s area. Divide room area by tile area for a raw count, then add your waste percentage and round up to whole tiles before purchasing.

What is the difference between floor mode and wall mode?

The maths is the same—both multiply two dimensions to get area—only the labels change (room width/length versus wall width/height) so you measure the surface you actually tile. Use floor mode for rectangular footprints and wall mode for splashbacks and shower elevations.

Should I subtract baths, showers, cabinets, or islands from the area?

This tool assumes one continuous rectangle. For floors, enter the net tiled footprint—or subtract fixed obstacles yourself before typing sizes (for example clear floor around a fitted tub or island). For walls, shorten height if tiling stops above a vanity or behind fixtures.

What waste percentage should I use?

Use roughly 10% for straightforward layouts. Use 12–15% or more for diagonal patterns, narrow cuts, mixed formats, or if you are new to tiling. Large tiles break less often but create more offcut waste per cut.

Do herringbone, diagonal, or decorative layouts need more waste?

Yes. Diagonal runs, herringbone, basket-weave, and mixed formats produce more cuts and unusable offcuts than a straight grid. Treat our percentage as a starting point and raise waste toward roughly 15–25% for intricate layouts or narrow halls.

Does this calculator subtract grout lines?

No. Grout joints slightly reduce coverage, but cut waste and breakage usually dominate. If you use very wide joints or small mosaics, consider increasing the waste percentage slightly.

How do tiles-per-box and “boxes needed” relate to the tile count?

Retail cartons list how many pieces are inside. After we calculate tiles needed, dividing by tiles-per-box and rounding up matches how you purchase stock. Pair “price per box” with tiles-per-box for carton-level budgeting; use “price per tile” when buying loose.

How many spare tiles should I keep after the job?

Keep several full tiles from the same dye lot for chips and future repairs—often cited guidance is about 3–5% of the installed quantity if storage allows, as long as it fits return policies. Photograph or note batch codes on cartons before recycling packaging.

Why does my “600 × 600 mm” tile measure slightly smaller?

Trade sizes are usually nominal; after firing and calibration real tiles can be a few millimetres undersize so grout joints stay consistent. For precise borders or laser layouts, use the manufacturer datasheet or measure one physical tile.

Can I mix measurement units?
